In 1956 she enrolled at the Camberwell School of Art and later won the Gulbenkian scholarship to study with S.W. Hayter at the Atelier 17 in Paris .
This world famous engraver worked with artists from both the surrealist and abstract expressionist groups including Marc Chagall, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Juan Miro and Jackson Pollock.
Agathe Sorel's experience at the Atelier 17 has influenced her entire career and in 1966-67 she was awarded a Churchill fellowship to work in the United States and Mexico . There she became interested in the possibilities of working with transparent materials like Perspex, combining the properties of line engraving with three dimensional form, following experiments of Naum Gabo and Lászlo Moholy-Nagy.
The artist's work is represented in 43 museums and public collections worldwide including the Tate Gallery and the British Museum
